Happy Birthday Richard Sherman!

Uncategorized Jun 22, 2020

June 12th: Happy Birthday Richard Sherman!

Born on this day in 1928, Richard and his brother Robert, worked directly for Walt Disney, writing the music and lyrics for Mary Poppins, Winnie The Pooh, Carousel Of Progress, It's A Small World, Bedknobs and Broomsticks ... the list is endless. Here five wonderful songs you should explore: *as always, click on the title for an accompaniment track and sheet music link*

Feed the Birds - Mary Poppins: this was Walt Disney's song. Richard Sherman played it for Walt on the piano in his office every Friday afternoon. After Walt's death, Richard continued this tradition in the empty office.

Enjoy It - In Search Of The Castaways: this charming little piece of optimism was introduced by the legendary Maurice Chevalier.

It's A Small World - It's A Small World Attraction: love it or loathe it, you have to admit the words are powerful and the tune unforgettable.

Little Black Rain Cloud - The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh:...

5 Disney Songs 🏰 (That Aren't Part of Your World🧜🏼‍♀️🤪)

Uncategorized Apr 07, 2020

If you know me, you know that I LOVE Disney more than most things in this life. If you don't know me, trust me when I say that Walt Disney is my hero and I adore the company he built. I state this because I want you to know that this post comes without malice toward Disney or its artists.

Part of Your World from Little Mermaid? Stop using it in auditions, festivals and competitions.

It's a beautiful song. And the recording Jodi Benson gave us is wonderful! Sing it! Sing it in the shower! In the car! As you're walking!

However, in competitions, festivals and audition rooms, it's overdone. Please stop using it in those scenarios. Here are five other Disney songs to consider instead. Click the titles for accompaniment tracks and sheet music links.

Cruella De Vil - 101 Dalmatians

Sassy, upbeat, and a little bit spooky!

Best Of Friends - Fox And The Hound

A lovely, vulnerable piece about friendship.

For A Moment - Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea

A great mermaid...

PS. These are in no particular order ... but I did put the most popular near the end ...

Oliver! This film is one where I think the libretto was vastly improved in the transfer to screen. The score is wonderful and Ron Moody is to die for.

Bells Are Ringing If you're not familiar with Judy Holliday - you are in for a treat! This musical was written for her by her dear friends, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. I'm so sorry to tell you that she died shortly after this film was made - cancer. She was a true comedic STAR. Please watch this film and keep her star shining.

Top Hat If you've not introduced your kids to Fred Astaire and Ginger...

On My Nightstand

March 5th: I'm still making my way (lovingly and carefully) through Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter. If you love this musical and/or love creative process and knowing how great pieces of art came together, you will LOVE this book!

February 20th: Just finished Atomic Habits by James Clear. A little dry, but actionable and fascinating info on ending bad habits and creating fantastic ones.
